Colorful Cottage Design

I am so excited to start sharing some interior design tips and schemes with you through mood boards! These design boards are intended to round up some items I am currently loving, and give you a one-stop-shop to follow the links and order.

When I think of my personal style, “Colorful Cottage” is how I would describe it. I like for a space to have a cozy but vibrant feel, and I want it to bring the outdoors inside!

Nature Inspired Focal Points

This Colorful Cottage scheme has some southern, nature-filled elements to it with the matching antler lamps, the lilac zinnia pillow, the faux purple greenery, jute rug, and a bobwhite quail print that I offer in my shop!

Let’s Talk Rugs

I think any nice size living room can handle layered rugs! Here I’ve shown a patterned jute rug as your larger rug. I would suggest measuring your space and allowing the rug to extend about 8 inches to 1 foot underneath your furniture all around. The smaller rug layered on top brings in some warm colorful tones without being too much! This rug can measure roughly 1 to 2 feet past your coffee table on all sides.

Pulling Colors Together

When you glance at the board, chances are you see overall tones of browns and ivory, teal, and warm purples! So, how did it all work? Let’s break it down.

Browns and Ivory — The jute rug, neutral antler lamps, upholstered ottoman, and skirted sofa all anchor the space. Notice the things that are neutral are some of the most important items in the room! This allows you to change your color scheme later on if you want.

Teal — The teal distressed sideboard is the pop of color in this scheme! I can speak from experience that this is a great quality sideboard! We purchased it in a Navy color and loved the outcome. The reviews of the teal one look great as well. So how does the vibrant teal work out in the space? I’ve pulled that color into others part of the room with the curtains, secondary pillows, and artwork.

Warm Purples — I’ve been eyeing these zinnia pillows for some time online! They are nature feeling while also being colorful. Both artwork pieces give that warm feel, along with the smaller rug. And the faux greenery… a mature touch of purple!

The Items that Summarize all of this COLOR!

Can you guess which pieces bring it all into a cohesive look? My favorite things of course! Artwork and pillows. The larger abstract painting has every color of the scheme within it. The bobwhite quail print (available in my shop) has that teal as the background, and all of the other colors within the quail! If you want a space to have cohesion without being too “matchy”, simply find a piece of artwork that speaks to you and incorporates most of the colors.

In summary, a Colorful Cottage look is one that brings a cozy feel into a home, embraces nature, and makes you happy! It doesn’t have to look just like this. Maybe you love yellow! Then replaces those purple tones with some faux forsythia, and yellow abstract painting, yellow block print pillows, and go from there!

All products shown on the board are linked below for you to shop! The are not commissionable links, just sharing things I love. 🙂
